Ms Courtney's Class

Students used their knowledge of the elements of music from their last unit and applied them to movement.  They chose a song and style of dance that they liked and tried to show a variety of movements that fit the music.

We went to Moo Moo Farms to learn how cows get milked. There was a tour guide named Mr Kenneth. - Jasmene  First, we went on the bus and the bus driver drove the bus to Moo Moo Farms. When we arrived there we had to listen to the man and we were not allowed to touch anything. - Vathanak Next, Mr Kenny told us things about the farm. Then he led us into the farm. - Josiah The guide took us to see the female cows that were eating corn, grains and wheat. After that we went to the baby cows, they were eating grains. There was nine of them eight of the baby cows were male and one of them was a girl. - Tashi After we went to see how they milk the dairy cows. - Eliza There were these tubes they put on the cows teats and the tubes suck the milk. Mr Kenny said that when the cow have their calf they could produce milk. he even told us that cows love grains. - Nicole The milk is from the mum because the mum has mil for her baby. Scratch Day (14th May) is a global network of events that celebrates Scratch — and the young people who code and create with it. During Scratch Day, children and adults gather to share projects and learn from one another. Our class is signed up to be part of this event. Our class have used Scratch this year to write stories, learn about co-ordinates and angles AND learn to code to make some fun games. Student explored the elements of music, such as tempo, pitch, dynamics and duration, to create a piece of music that would allow the audience to have an idea, feeling or story.  They started to work on this individually and later some students chose to work collaboratively.  Here is their final composition.

G2 Art-Unit 2- Nature and Architecture We observed shapes in architecture and shapes in nature.  We investigated the functions (purposes) of nature and architecture.  We used our imaginations and feedback from friends or family to draw and build architecture inspired by nature.  Here is my artwork: G2 Art- Unit 3- Finding and Making Meaning in Abstract Art We found shapes, colors and lines in abstract artworks.  We discussed our experiences and emotions connected to the colors, lines and shapes.  We used this to guess the meaning of abstract artworks.  We sorted abstract artworks to explore how some are “a little abstract, very abstract or not abstract”.  We also made abstract artworks about ourselves for others to interpret.

Today I am happy because this is book week! Mr Bernard came to talk with us about Kamishibai on Monday. I am Matilda today, before I chose to wear Fancy Nancy, but then I realized that I wanted to be Matilda. When I went to school Ms.Courtney was Ms. Honey and Ms.Courtney is my teacher, Ms.Liz was Ms. Trunchbell from Matilda. Ms.Liz even came to the field trip with us.

We started looking at our next unit of inquiry this afternoon. Six teachers brought three artefacts that represent something about them to school and the students had to guess which artefacts belonged to each teacher and why. The students demonstrated some excellent thinking and reasoning skills trying to guess which table belonged to each teacher. Supporting the EY - Grade 1 Sports Day

Last Friday afternoon we were very lucky. Tara, Ben's Mum, came to play the cello to us. She spoke to us about the cello, the different sounds it can make and what inspired her learn to play the it. What we learnt: " I learnt that bow is made out of horse hair ". George "  I listened to her and she said that 800 years ago there wasn't any cars. There were horses so that is why the bow is made from horse hair ". Alex " I learnt that the cello is made out of wood ". Nicole " I remember she said that you use rosin to help make the sound louder, the wax sticks to the strings ". Taylor " I learnt that the cello is very old ". Joshua " I learnt that on a aeroplane a cello must have its own seat "! Eliza " She said she started with a violin but she moved on to a cello, she changed because she liked the sound of a cello when she was playing in an orchestra" . Welcome back to term 2! I hope you all had a relaxing break. I math we have started the term off by revisiting 2D shapes and learning about 3D shapes. We have identified the names of 2D and 3D shapes, and the properties of 3D shapes. Before the break we looked at 4 different pieces of art and wrote down the different shapes, angles and lines we could see in the art. We have explored the 2D and 3D shapes we have in the classroom. Students have created their own pictures, made patterns and looked at how joining shapes together can make a new shape.  We made 'clue bags' for 3D shapes. The students listed clues about a shape on the front of the bag and the rest of the class were able to guess the 3D shape. We made 'What does the SHAPE say' sheets. Students chose four 2D or 3D shapes and listed the attributes of each shape.  We completed Mathletics activities on shape. In math we will now begin to inquiry into telli...

Our Not a box designs Today we invited EY2 to visit Grade 2 to look at our Not a box. They had also been reading the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis and created a giant pirate ship , they could fit most of their class into. All the students did an amazing job demonstrating the Learner Profile attributes of Communicators, Knowledgeable and Risk-Takers. The students were excellent role models for the younger students and can be very proud of their work.
