Mr Barry came to visit Grade 2 this afternoon to talk to us about what sustainable features have been included in the new campus. This is what we learnt: All the doors are self closing, to keep the cool air in We might get new shades on the outside of the windows to keep the sun out Grey water irrigation under the ground to water the field There is a 3-5 year plan for the trees to fully grow The roofs are white to reflect the sun The electricity bill for one month at ISPP is $40,000 Solar panels are going to be installed on the roof Non-toxic paint has been used all around the school All the food scraps from the cafeteria go to a local farmer to feed animals Shade sails will be put up in the playground over the Christmas break Most of the materials used at the school are from within 500 miles of ISPP They might make a butterfly farm on the roof of the Knowledge Centre The windows are tinted to keep the sun out (like wearing sunglasses) They chose trees that ar...

The integrated language genre for this unit is persuasive writing. We have followed the writing process to complete a persuasive writing piece. The first part of the process was encouraging to chose a side for different statements and be able to justify their reasons. Students then chose a statement to write about. Students worked in groups to find three or four different reasons to support their opinion.  The next step was to complete a draft in their writing books. Once this was complete students self-edited their work, then had it checked by a teacher. Once this was complete it was time for them to publish their writing. We used Google Drive on the iPad's and the computers in the lab to do this. The complete process is in the students portfolios. Today Chris came to talk to us about urban environments. First he talked to us about how we could help and make a good urban environment.  He showed us the map of Phnom Penh and the different places on the map, likes parks and roads. We were able to share ideas of how to make a better urban environment. He told us that if we stopped using cars and motorbikes our environment would be better. He was talking to us about riding bikes and recycling. He suggested that we can do the following to improve our urban environment: Recycle and reuse paper, bowls, cups, toys, plastic, cans Pick up trash, even if it is not ours Eat locally Walk or bicycle  In an urban environment we need: Clean air Clear water Trees and plants

We looked at the wordless book  Window by Jeannie Baker this week and discussed the changes and modifications they saw in the different pictures. Students reflected on the changes to the environment over a span of 22 years and we discussed why these changes may occur. Each student drew a picture of the view outside their own bedroom (or favourite) window.
