Essential Agreements

In a PYP classroom essential agreements for the class are developed at the beginning of the school year. Essential Agreements are a set of 4 or 5 agreements that all members of the class agree on and follow, essential agreements are written in the positive and collaboratively.

In the first two weeks of school we will be creating our class essential agreements for the year. They will be displayed in the classroom and here once they have been developed.

Homework

The ISPP Homework Policy states that Grade 2 students will complete 20-30 minutes of homework 4 nights a week. This timeframe includes allowing time for nightly reading.

From Grades 2 to 5 small amounts of homework are assigned to allow students to develop independent study skills, organize tasks at home and develop the ability to manage their time on projects.

Students may be given practice work to reinforce skills they have learned or need to have reinforced. Students should not spend long periods of time on homework and certainly should avoid staying up late to finish it.

Parents can help their child by setting aside a time and quiet place for homework to be completed. Families are encouraged to communicate with the teacher using the Homework planner or make an appointment if there are any difficulties or misunderstandings about the homework set.

Action as Service

The action component of the PYP can involve service in the widest sense of the word: service to fellow students, and to the larger community, both in and outside the school. Through such service, students are able to grow both personally and socially, developing skills such as cooperation, problem solving, conflict resolution, and creative and critical thinking. Moveover, these actions are ways in which the students exhibit their commitment to the attributes of the learner profile and to the attitudes that we seek to engender within the PYP classroom. In fact, the actions that the students choose to take as a result of the learning may be considered the most significant summative assessment of the efficacy of the programme.

Birthdays

Birthdays are an important and fun event for children (and adults). If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday at school please contact me a few days in advance. We will celebrate birthday at the end of the school day. You are welcome to provide a cake for the celebration, please keep serving sizes small. Small cupcakes are the easiest to serve to students.
