How We Express Ourselves - Week 1

We began our 5th unit of inquiry this week. Our central idea is:

People can find artistic inspiration by discovering and interpreting nature.

We will be inquiring into:

  • Nature in the World around us

  • Ways our observations and inquiries influence our action and art making

This unit we will be focusing on different forms of art, how people are connected to nature and how we interpret nature to create art.

Students will be working on this unit in Art and Music.

Journals

The students have been working on at art journal in the classroom, art and music. Over the unit all the students thinking, pieces of art they create and reflections will be in these. The journal will become their summative assessment.

On Wednesday all the Grade 2 students worked together to develop a set of criteria of what they will need to do to be successful in this unit.

The success criteria the students decided on are:

  • I can understand clearly what I am creating before I start.
  • I can make my own artworks with connections to nature and myself.
  • I can look closely and carefully and find out some information from different sources.
  • I can reflect on my work a lot, listen to feedback, and make changes if I need to.
We will refer to these statements throughout the unit and provide feedback along the way.

Tuning into nature - On Monday students had the opportunity to explore a variety of items from nature after they chose one item they wanted to draw in their journals.

Math

Over the past two weeks we have been focusing on the foundations and multiplication and division in math.

We have been learning about arrays, groups of and repeated addition. A strong understanding of these is important for students to be able to complete multiplication equations.
