How The World Works - Week 2

This was a another successful week of learning. Please read on to find out what happened.

Minecraft
What possibly could be the highlight of the year began on Tuesday. Minecraft!! Mr Matt has created a Minecraft world with different environments for plant growth. Students are working in groups and each have their own land to plant and grow plants on. The need to recreate the right environments for the plants to grow and care for them. To find seeds students need to travel to the different environments in the world like the dessert, rainforest and cave to find seeds. This was the first of three weeks we will be using Minecraft to help develop our understanding of the central idea and lines of inquiry.

Plant Experiments
We began our scientific experiments on Wednesday. In pairs students created a question and hypothesis and conducted the experiment. We are observing results each day and very excited to see what happens next. We will feature on Monday's episode of ISPP TV. I will share this on the blog next week.

Explanation Writing
Our writing genre for this unit is explanation. With Ms Petra students have been developing their understanding of what an explanation text is, the features and how when to use them. We had a go at writing about how plants grow. The knowledge and understand students are showing is wonderful to see.

Success Criteria
On Monday all of Grade 2 came together to develop the success criteria for our summative assessment. The students needed to really think about what being successful in this unit would look like and what they need to do. I was so impressed with their understanding and thinking skills.

Action!
Action is an essential element in the PYP. Most action happens at home. If you notice your child taking action at home please let me know. Here are some ideas of what action is.

This week Molly bought a book from home to school on plants. We enjoyed reading this book and learning some interesting information.
