How The World Works - Week 1

We started our second unit of inquiry this week. The students were very engaged in their learning and looking forward to the rest of the unit.

Central Idea:

Plants require specific environments and conditions for growth.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Cycles and characteristics of plants
  • Factor that influence plant growth
  • Ways plants adapt to their environment

Key Concepts:

  • Form
  • Function
  • Causation
Related Concepts:
  • Appreciation
  • Curiosity

Prior Knowledge assessment:
On Monday students were asked to draw and label a plant. After they had completed this they wrote what plants need to grow.

We started looking at the form of a plant. Students label each part of the plant in their mother tongue and this has been displayed in the classroom. The students enjoyed learning the parts of a plant in different languages.

We have been tracking and with the help of Mr Ben caring for the maize we planted in August. On Friday we measured the maize and it is 137cm. We will continue to measure the maize each Friday and use this data in math.

The text type for this unit is explanation writing. For the summative assessment students will create their own non-fiction book explaining an area they have researched this unit. We started identifying features of a non-fiction text on Tuesday. The students were able to create their own list of the features, this will be turned into their assessment criteria later in the unit.

For our provocation students explored different seeds, plants, leaves and roots and. They were asked 'What do they think?' and 'What do they wonder?' They have some interesting wonderings. We have started looking for the answers to these wonderings and will continue over the next few weeks.

We recorded the students initial thinking for this unit. They have a good understanding of how plants grow and what they need to grow.

Math:
We began module 3 in math this week. Please see the newsletter for more information on this module. We will continue this module until the water festival break. In math we introduced 'I can statements'. Students are explained at the start of each lesson which statement they will be working towards. This week we focused on the these statements.

Buddies:
On Tuesday the Grade 5 students made their own slime. We got to check out the different slimes and vote for our favourite, it was a close call but found a winner in the end.

Wet day play:
It was raining during lunch on Thursday and students played inside. I was so impressed with their communication and cooperation skills and enjoyed watching them all play together.

Birthdays:
We were very lucky to celebrate not 1, not 2, but 3 birthdays this week!!! Happy Birthday Noel, Eric and Andrew.

Message from Music:

Grade 2 needs clean glass jars (labels removed) for music class. Please don't throw them away, bring them to school and drop off in the music studio. Thanks so much, Ms. Danielle
