School Closure and How We Organize ourselves Week 7

With an unexpected shortened week at school we have only 3 and a half days of school left. We have been completing a ice-cream van math project which requires incorporates all the math skills we have learnt this week. We have also been writing about our upcoming summer holidays and taking the time to prepare for change for our leaving students and thinking of ways we can keep in touch with them. As well as this we write letters to next years Grade 2 students with some words of advise and tips.

Podcasts
On Monday and Tuesday we started to talk about media and podcasts. We brainstormed was media is and how we are able to learn new information. After this we listened to an episode on Wow in the World. The students were engaged with a lot of questions and made good connections to other knowledge they have. If you are looking for some Podcasts over the summer Wow in the World and Brains On have some very good science based Podcasts for children.

Skyping with a Lego game designer

We have been making games in UoI. To help with our games, Anton's father helped us set up a Skype interview with Jesper at Lego in Denmark. We had some trouble connecting but Eito and Angela were able to ask some questions on behalf of our class. We were interested in his responses. Here are some of the things we found out:
  • He works for Lego - working with people to design new toys.
  • He heard about the job through a friend of his who was working there.
  • The ideas for his games never come to him the same way...but they usually start with either a theme or a mechanism that capture his imagination.
  • Games need different features to make them successful - it really depends on who is playing the game and whether it is for fun or a strategic game. Successful games can't be too easy to win...otherwise the players get bored.
  • The most popular games at the moment are strategic and cooperative games.
  • A game takes 1/2 year to 8 months to design and another year to release. They test the games throughout the process.
We really appreciated Jesper taking the time to talk to us and have started applying what we learned to fine-tune our own designs.
