How We Organize Ourselves - Week 1

Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday last week. This week we began our final unit of inquiry for the year. Our Central Idea is Products can go through a process of change before they are distributed and consumed.

We completed a number of learning experiences about where our food comes from and how it has changed.

Go Bananas
To start the unit the students were given a photo of one stage of the process bananas go through from seed in Columbia to the shop in the UK. First the students needed to think of all the questions they had about this photo.

After this the students were given a different photos and needed to think and draw the stage before and after the photo they had. This really made the students think about the photo and what would happen before and after. When all the groups had finished the students arranged the photos in the correct order.

Provocation
On Wednesday the students had the opportunity to explore a range of food products. The students could touch, smell, look and play with a variety of foods. The students were given guiding questions while they were doing this.

"This smells good. I think it is made of wood" - Alethea (Cinnamon)

"It's disgusting! Is it tofu?" -Alethea "What is tofu?" Jeslyn (Tofu)

"This makes a drink." - Phallyka (Sugar Cane)

"Is this like the popcorn thing?" - Phallyka (Corn kernels)

"What is ketchup made of?" - Phallyka (Ketchup)

"What is this?" - Phallyka "Pumpkin" - Alethea "I have never seen it with the skin on before" - Phallyka (Pumpkin)

"How come chilis are big and small?" - Itzia (Chili)

"We use this at Christmas" - Helmi (Cinnamon)

"This smells like caramel, is it?" - Anna (Palm Sugar)

"Is this peas? I can see them" - Arisa (Snow peas)

"It smells like licorice" - Itzia (Star Anise)

"I eat this with steak" - Sothamara (Peppercorn)

On Thursday the students worked with a partner to research one of the food items to find where it most commonly grows, how it grows and what food products can be made from it.

On Friday the students prepared the food to make soup. The students worked hard to peel and cut all the vegetables to make the soup. Once it was cooked we enjoyed eating it!

Minecraft
In this unit we will be using Minecraft with Mr Matt. On Tuesday our Grade 5 buddies introduced the Grade 2 students to Minecraft and taught them the different commands and how to build in Minecraft.

SupercyclingMan
The highlight of the week for many students was the visit from the Super Cycling Man. They students enjoyed meeting him, seeing his bike and asking questions. The students worked with him to create a superhero based on their strengths. In class we wrote a poem about their superhero.

Welcome Lucas
On Monday we welcomed Lucas to our class. Lucas is from Taiwan and has been living in China. The students have been wonderful welcoming him and showing him around the school.
