How the World Works - Week 1
Our new unit of inquiry is How the World Works
Central Idea:
The application of scientific principles through the use of simple machines makes work easier.
Lines of Inquiry:
The ways machines and force work
The application of machines to make work easier
Key Concepts:
Causation, Connection, Function
We will be exploring this unit until the Khmer New Year break. This week we started by finding out way the different simple machines are and what their function is. Students became experts in one simple machine and then shared this information with the class.
We completed a pre assessment task. Students were given the problem that an elephant had escaped from the zoo. The students needed to create a machine to get the elephant back to the zoo. After this the students gave feedback to each others machine.
Provocation
On Tuesday the students played with our simple machine equipment. The students quickly made complex machines and tested with different heights, weights and speeds. We will continue to use this equipment throughout the unit.
Field Trip
Friday we visited Wat Botum playground to play on the equipment. Upon returning to school we reflected on the different simple machines we saw and how they work in the playground.
