Where we are in Place and Time week 1

We started our new unit on inquiry this week, Where we are in Place and Time. The students are very engaged in the discussions and activities they have taken part in this week.

All the students summative assessments are in their individual page, please have a look at their understanding from the last unit of inquiry. The Grade 2s shared some of their learning on this weeks ISPP TV. We watch ISPP TV each Monday morning, the students look forward to it and very eager to be in it.

Provocation
We started looking at our next unit of inquiry on Monday. Six teachers brought three artifacts that represent something about them to school and the students had to guess which artifacts belonged to each teacher and why.

The students demonstrated some excellent thinking and reasoning skills trying to guess which table belonged to each teacher.

Can you guess which teacher the artifacts belong to?

The teachers are Ms Anita, Ms Karyn, Ms Dee, Mr Jon, and Ms Courtney.

Chapter books with Ms Rachel
Ms Rachel spoke to us during our library session this week about some good chapter book choices and showed us some examples. Many of the students enjoyed finding out about new books and selected one to borrow to take home.

Guest Speaker
We had Friends International visit us on Thursday to talk about some of their upcycling projects. The students learnt how to make paper beads and had fun rolling the paper into beads.

Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge
We read Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge and had a discussion about memories, artifacts and how the two can be linked. The students then created their own book of memories with artifacts important to them.

Finding artifacts in the classroom
As the students returned to class from the library this week they had found that the classroom had become an archaeology dig site. Students needed to observe the artifacts they found, record where they found them and use the clues they found to understand the artifacts.

Unit Word posters
As we have begun talking about our new unit a lot of unknown words have come up. We created posters to help us learn about these words to display in the classroom.
