Sharing the Planet - Week 1

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a wonderful week last week. Thank you for coming to the classroom on Monday or Tuesday to look at the student's art work from our last unit. Opportunities for the students to share their learning is always valuable.

We started our new unit of inquiry this week. We spent a lot of time this week talking about cities, what is needed in an urban environment and what we like and dislike about them. Over the coming weeks students will identify one issue within our urban environment and using the Creative Cycle, come up with a plan make modifications to this.

Prior Knowledge Assessment
At the beginning of each unit we assess the students to find out what they already know and plan the unit with this information. This week we asked students to write, list, draw, map everything they knew about an urban environment (city). The students were very eager to share and all did a great job sharing their knowledge.

Paper City
This unit links to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11: 'Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable'. We watched a stop motion animation called Paper City - An Urban Story created by UN Habitat. This highlighted the issues we are currently facing within urban environments and ways solutions to overcome these problems. This clip promoted a lot of wonderful discussion with the students.

Language for this unit
We have spent time thinking about the different language we are going to need throughout this unit. We completed a survey using Google Forms about the words we need to describe cities and our favourite places in a city. With this data Mr Jon created a Wordle of the words.

Provocation
On Wednesday we asked the students to create a city on two tables in the classroom using the resources in the room. The students needed to use their communication and collaboration skills to build their city.

On Thursday we visited both Ms Anita and Ms Karyn's class cities and left feedback for them and got some new ideas. When we returned to our classroom we looked at the feedback left for us and made a plan of how we can modify our city to improve it. We then spent the rest of Thursday afternoon making these modifications to our city.

The next step was to reflect on what we did and how we all worked together. We used De Bono's thinking hats for this reflection.

School Walk
To understand our environment we need to know what is in it. We had a look over the fence of ISPP to see what is around our school, we thought about what some of the land is being used for and what might happen in the future.
