Week Three
Growth Mindset
We began to delve into our first unit for the year this week. We started with a challenge for the students to make a folded piece of paper the same as mine. They were allowed to look at the paper from any angle, but could not touch the paper. While they were trying to make it I recorded some of the comments that I heard the students say. After 10 minutes we looked at the list of comments on the board and wondered if these would help us to complete the task.
This activity led us into a discussion on Growth Mindset.
Over the year we will spend a lot of time helping students develop a growth mindset. The poster below have some excellent questions that can be used both at school and home.
Unit Provocations
Connecting health related items
On Thursday 12 health related items were placed in the piazza. Students had the opportunity to explore these items. After this the students drew a picture of each item and had to draw a line to show the link between the items that were on display.
This activity was used as a tuning in activity for our current unit of inquiry. We will continue to develop our understanding of different ways you can be healthy and why it is important to make healthy choices in our lives.
Cloud Dough
Students worked with Ms Anita to make cloud dough. They were given the materials and then got busy mixing and kneading the dough. The students enjoyed seeing what happened when the materials were mixed together and the different textures they could create.
Collaborative Art
In Ms Karyn's room the students have been working on a collaborative art piece which will include some of the challenges they face in learning. This is a work in progress.
Buddies
We had the opportunity to meet our Grade 5 buddies. The students were so excited to finally work them them and we are looking forward to the year ahead.
Thank you
I would like to express my thanks to you all for coming to the Hopes and Concerns meetings this week. I really value the conversations and look forward to working with you for the rest of the year.

If you have a growth mindset, you believe that with work, practice, and perseverance, you can improve – whether it’s your academic performance, or any other skill. (Those with the opposite, a fixed mindset, believe that our intelligence and talents are predisposed, and either you were born with it or not.)
Thanks to the great work of Stanford’s Carol Dweck, we know that not only is the growth mindset accurate, but those who hold these beliefs actually improve more than those with a fixed mindset, which makes it so essential for our kids!
