Provocation - How the world works
This week we began tuning into our new unit of inquiry. We completed three provocations and started reading about simple machines.
Provocation 1
On Tuesday we explored different simple machines. The students were encouraged to play with the different simple machines and complete an 'I see, I think, I wonder' of the experience.
Provocation 2
Students were asked to get a marble from one side of the classroom to the other side only using paper and tape. They were not allowed to use any of their own force. The students worked with a partner in a small group to complete the challenge.
Provocation 3
The students were given nine popsicle sticks, six rubber bands, a plastic spoon and a pom-pom The challenge was to make a simple machine using all the equipment to make the pom-pom hit a target on the wall. The students showed good thinking and problem solving skills to create a simple machine. They worked out the best simple machine would be a lever and they went about trying to work it out. They were allowed to use an iPad to look for help. By the end of the challenge everyone had worked out how to make the simple machine and had fun trying to get the pom-pom to hit the target.
After this provocation we read the book 'The Most Magnificent Thing' by Ashley Spires. We talked about the challenges she faced in creating her design and how we need to develop our ideas, learn from our mistakes and be prepared to take our time to create the perfect machine.

This is amazing!!Thanks a ton for sharing.I loved the fact you made use of technology and considered individual thinking and paired one as well in provocation.
